BNP Paribas names Vietnam head
BNP Paribas has moved Aymar de Liedekerke Beaufort to Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam to head its Vietnam operation covering corporate and institutional banking, investment solutions and retail banking. This could be a culture shock – Beaufort is currently head of corporate banking for BNP Paribas in Germany and will be moving from the sanitised streets of Frankfurt. He has been in this role since June 2012 and has been based in Frankfurt. Prior to that, he had been head of BNP’s business in several Eastern European countries such as Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
Once in Vietnam, Beaufort will report to Pierre Veyres, regional head for Southeast Asia and CEO of BNP’s Singapore branch.
Monetary Authority of Singapore hires Sopnendu Mohanty to lead new fintech group
Sopnendu Mohanty has left his role as global head of consumer innovation lab networks and programmes at Citi to lead the new fintech group being set up at MAS. This is seen as Singapore’s bid to establish itself as a global hub for the fast growing fintech industry and is expected to be launched next month.
Mohanty joins the group as chief fintech officer. He will be leading the group in tasks such as regulatory policies and development strategies to facilitate the use of technology and innovation.
Barclays promotes Asia research head
Jon Scoffin and Jeff Meli have been named co-heads of global research at Barclays. Both are internal promotions; Scoffin was previously head of research Asia Pacific, a post he has held since 2006 from Singapore.
Meli joined Barclays in 2005 as head of US credit strategy research and was co-head of FICC research.
Scoffin and Meli will report to Tom King, chief executive of Barclays’s investment bank.
Four more bankers leave Jefferies in Hong Kong
Four senior bankers are leaving Jefferies Hong Kong. Ronald Tam, head of corporate finance for Asia, Katherine Huang, a senior vice president, and Michael Sun and Jeff Na, both vice presidents.
This follows some other high-profile departures at Jefferies Hong Kong operation at the end of March. Then three investment bankers left; Richard Yang, a managing director for healthcare and consumer; Dai Qiang, a managing director for TMT, and Terry Zhi, a senior vice president.
But a spokesman of Jefferies told FinanceAsia that “In the last six months we have increased the number of investment bankers in Asia by approximately 20%”.
Jungle Ventures recruits managing partner
David Gowdey joins venture capital firm Jungle Ventures as managing partner from private equity firm TPG Growth. In his over 16 years in private equity, Gowdey largely worked in online media and internet companies. Notably, he worked as head of international corporate development, M&A at Yahoo! from November 1999 to December 2011. From Yahoo! he spun out a venture capital fund called Xplorer Capital, which focused on internet investments across the emerging markets
He will be based in Singapore, leading Series A and B stage investments with a focus on the consumer internet sector.
