It’s January and in theory investment banking recruitment should start the year with a bang. Considering the ongoing job cuts, it’s more likely to begin with a whimper. And yet, towards the end of 2015 and into the New Year, large investment banks have been hiring. These are the most interesting people to have come in.

J.P. Morgan has recruited a medicinal chemistry PhD as a pharma equity analyst

Julian Shaw joined J.P. Morgan after less than a year working for healthcare research firm GlobalData and it’s his first venture into investment banking. He’s covering the European pharma market, having spent the previous four years completing a medicinal chemistry PhD from Trinity College Dublin followed by a stint researching ‘photoswitchable chemotherapeutics’ at LMU in Germany.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch has rehired a senior FX trader after a stint as a trading coach

Sachin Shah has just joined Bank of America Merrill Lynch as a senior trader covering G10 foreign exchange. He left BAML in 2009 and departed from large investment banks entirely – instead helping set up Savi Trading, in a role which combined prop trading his own book and overseeing the firm’s trader training programme.

Barclays has taken on a former Bank of England economist

Barclays’ investment bank is doing more hiring than firing, but if you have the right sort of expertise, it’s still willing to take you on. Tomasz Wieladek, an economics PhD, was a senior research manager at Bank of England, covering financial stability and risk, bank stress testing and macro economic issues. He’s just joined Barclays’ investment bank.

Citi has hired a former medical doctor as a healthcare analyst

There’s a theme here – if you want to work as a pharma or healthcare analyst, it clearly helps to have extensive knowledge of medicine. J.P. Morgan has taken on a PhD, while Citi has gone for a more conventional medical background. Amalan Selvarajah was working as a doctor for the NHS until 2011, when he joined UBS. He’s just signed up as a global healthcare and pharmaceuticals analyst at Citi.

HSBC has hired a lecturer at Cass Business School

Banks seem to be targeting academia. Jan Novotny, who was a research fellow and visiting lecturer at Cass Business School’s Centre for Econometric Analysis, has just joined HSBC. Novotny was also head of research at Richfox Capital in Prague, where he developed quantitative strategies. He also has a Masters in Experimental Nuclear Physics.

Morgan Stanley has hired a senior fixed income trader from Barclays

Morgan Stanley is, of course, brutally cutting back in its fixed income division. But, occasionally, it’s also hiring. Tanya Laing, who was formerly a senior CER currencies trader at Barclays in London, has just joined Morgan Stanley in a senior role. Before joining Barclays she was at Deutsche Bank and before this, she worked at ABN Amro for eight years.
