6 new buy-side firms hiring irrespective of Brexit

In the build up to the Brexit vote, new hedge fund, private equity firms and other small finance firms were in the process of getting off the ground. These are the top new London companies to launch in May and June, tracked by corporate finance boutique IMAS. Their timing might not be great, but many are hiring.

1. Glen Point Capital

The much-anticipated launch from former Bluebay Capital Management fund managers Neil Phillips and Jonathan Fayman, Glen Point Capital was given the thumbs up by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in May and already has 12 listed employees.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, many have worked for Bluebay previously. These include trader and risk analyst, Matt Garnett, CFO Alan Jacobson, trader Jeffrey Meyers, head of risk Colin Read

Gavin Brennon is head of operations, joining from Anavon Capital, Hopewell Wood, the former CEO of Comac Capital, is head of business development, while James Stevens who also worked for Comac is COO and head of compliance, and Daisy Hunter leads investor relations.

2. Quantum Investing

Karim Bennani, the former head of Goldman Sachs’ Advanced Investment Strategies division, has just launched his own quantitative hedge fund, Quantum Investing. He’s been involved in the project since August last year and is so far the only FCA-registered employee.

3. Origin Equity

The new firm of private equity veterans Gavin Loughrey and Olivia Roberts, who were latterly at Alchemy Partners and Montagu Private Equity respectively, Origin is targeting investments in the UK services sector. So far, they are the only listed employees.

4. Selwood Asset Management

A credit-focused asset manager, Selwood has so far managed to attract a series of senior figures who previously worked in investment banking.

For a start, Sofiane Gharred, the former head of structured credit trading at Credit Agricole, is founding partner.

Hobson Barnes, the former head of absolute return strategies at Lehman Brothers and director of sales at Aspect Capital, is a partner in charge of business development, former Citigroup director, Patrick Hughes, is a partner and senior analyst, ex-UBS structured credit trader, Bechir Daoud, is a portfolio manager and Charles Veillet-Lavallee, who was an associate director in UBS’s structured credit team, joined in July.

Malcolm Butler, the former chairman of Comac Capital, is COO at Selwood.

5. Atlas Square Partners

The new hedge fund led by Kamal Marchoudi, a former Goldman Sachs executive director who was most recently a portfolio manager at Scoggin Capital. Byron Houdayer is another partner, while Stuart Atkinson, who previously led Commodities World Partners, heads up compliance.

6. Skybridge Capital UK

Skybridge Capital, the fund of hedge funds led by SALT Conference organiser Anthony Scaramucci, has started a UK arm. So far, only Scaramucci himself, CIO Ryamond Nolte and Hesham Alquaraini, a managing director who previously workd for the Kuwait Investment Authority and investment management firm QWin Capital, are listed as employees.
