UBS equity analyst returns to Exane to claim ex-boss’s job

It sounds like the ideal career ‘arc.’ You’re happily working as the number two at a cosy French bank when a more ebullient and high-pressure Swiss bank invites you to come along and be the number one. You switch across for a few years and then your old boss at the French bank leaves and you’re invited back to do his job. Perfect.

Such appears to have been the experience of Andrew Gwynn, who just rejoined Exane’s equity research team as a food analyst.

Headhunters say Gwynn’s replaced John Kershaw, a former Exane managing director in food equity research. Kershaw has left the bank after four years and says he’s looking for “challenges anew.” Insiders say he’s off to do something more entrepreneurial after 15 years in sell-side research.

We understand that Gwynn previously worked under Kershaw at Exane between 2012 and 2015. He left for UBS in February 2015 when the Swiss bank offered him a more senior role, but only spent 18 months at the Swiss bank.

“There’s a bit of pressure at UBS at the moment. Everyone’s looking over their shoulder there,” says one equity research headhunter. “This looks like an opportunity to go back to a previous employer where you were happy, but in a more senior role.”
