Another senior banker with a long and illustrious career in the City is said to be calling it a day.

Headhunters say Simon Samuels, Barclays’ top-ranked banking analyst, is preparing to retire in the coming months. Samuels has ranked at the top of the Extel Survey of banking analysts for many years. He came first in 2013, 2012 and 2011 and has ranked highly ever since his career began at Salomon Smith Barney in the 1990s.

Barclays declined to comment on Samuel’s retirement. A colleague said he is not going yet and will be back at his desk next Tuesday, but senior sources confirmed his departure.

Samuels joined Barclays from Citi in 2009, along with colleagues Tom Raynor and Jeremy Sigee. It’s not clear who will replace him. Headhunters said Barclays, which is currently looking to cut costs and has promised not to recruit expensive managing directors externally, is likely to look for an internal replacement.
