Pamplona Capital Management, the energy-focused alternative asset manager that is backed by Russian oligarch Michail Fridman’s Alfa Group, has ramped up pay for its partners following a year of expansion.

The firm paid its 21 partners an average of £1.6m last year, according to accounts filed on Companies House today, up from £1.2m in 2012 following a £9.7m increase in profits to £29.8m. Away from the senior level, it allocated £4.6m for its 33 employees, or an average payment of £139.3k.

Last year, Pamplona launched the L1 Energy fund using the money from the sale of Alfa Group’s stake in oil venture TNK-BP to invest in oil and gas projects. Since then, it’s been building its team.

Joao Saraiva e Silva left Carlyle Group after less than four months to lead a new Pamplona’s energy team, while Ekaterina Zotova, who was head of Citigroup’s international acquisitions and divestments team within the bank’s oil and energy team, also joined as a principal earlier this year.

Zotova has a background working for large energy companies – having spent much of her career working for Shell – which is reflective of the background Pamplona recruits from. In April, Francis Sommer joined the firm as a partner in its London office, having previously spent over seven years working for TNK-BP in Russia.

Pamplona said that it has 20 code staff, five of whom are in senior management. The executives were paid £4.9m, according to the accounts, while the remaining 15 code staff shared £4.7m.
